Kalofuel ("the App") is an AI-powered nutrition tracking application. This Privacy Policy describes how your information is collected, used, and shared when you use the App.
Information We Collect
Information You Provide
- Meal Photos — Photos you take of food for AI-powered nutrition estimation. These photos are stored locally on your device and optionally backed up to your personal iCloud account.
- Nutrition Data — Meal entries including calories, macronutrients, and micronutrients that you log or that are estimated by AI.
- Health & Fitness Goals — Weight targets, activity level, and dietary preferences you configure during setup.
- API Keys — If you choose to use AI-powered features, you provide your own API key for your chosen AI provider (Google Gemini, Anthropic Claude, or OpenAI). These keys are stored securely in the iOS Keychain on your device.
Information from Apple Health
With your permission, the App reads the following data from Apple HealthKit:
- Body weight and body fat percentage
- Active energy burned
The App writes the following data to Apple HealthKit:
- Dietary energy (calories), protein, carbohydrates, and fat from logged meals
Information Collected Automatically
The App does not collect any analytics, crash reports, device identifiers, or usage data. Zero telemetry. Zero tracking.
How We Use Your Information
- Meal Estimation — When you photograph a meal, the image is sent directly to your chosen AI provider (Google, Anthropic, or OpenAI) for nutrition estimation. The App does not route this data through any intermediary server.
- USDA Nutrient Lookup — The App queries the USDA FoodData Central API to verify and enrich nutrition estimates. Only food names are sent, not personal information.
- Local Storage — All meal data, goals, and preferences are stored locally on your device using SwiftData.
- iCloud Backup — If enabled, your meal data and preferences are backed up to your personal iCloud Drive account. This data is protected by your Apple ID and iCloud encryption.
Third-Party Services
The App communicates with the following third-party services only when you initiate an action (e.g., photographing a meal or generating insights):

Important: You provide your own API key for the AI service. The App does not have access to any shared or pooled API keys. Your usage is governed by the terms of service of your chosen AI provider.
Data Storage & Security
- Local First — All data is stored locally on your device. The App does not operate any backend servers.
- No Account Required — The App does not require you to create an account or provide an email address.
- API Key Security — Your AI API key is stored in the iOS Keychain, which provides hardware-backed encryption.
- iCloud Backup — If enabled, backups are stored in your personal iCloud Drive container and protected by Apple's iCloud security.
- No Server — The App does not transmit data to any server operated by the developer. All network calls go directly to the third-party APIs listed above.
Data Retention
- All data is stored locally on your device and in your personal iCloud account (if backup is enabled).
- You can delete all data at any time through the App's Settings.
- Uninstalling the App removes all local data. iCloud backup data can be removed from your iCloud settings.
Children's Privacy
The App is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.
Your Rights
Since all data is stored locally on your device or in your personal iCloud account, you have full control over your data at all times. You can:
- View all stored data within the App
- Export your data as JSON
- Delete individual meals or all data
- Disable iCloud backup
- Remove your API key at any time
Apple Health Data Disclosure
This App complies with Apple's HealthKit guidelines:
- Health data is not used for advertising or marketing purposes
- Health data is not sold to third parties
- Health data is not shared with third parties for purposes unrelated to improving the user's health
- Health data access is only requested for features directly visible to the user
Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of any changes by updating the "Last Updated" date above.
